You can offer products with multiple variant types, like size, color, and cut, using the Variants feature. Variant Groups allow you to create up to three dropdown menus on each product listing so customers can easily select and cart the exact product they are looking for. You can even set different prices for variants within a product once those Variant Groups are listed.

Create Variant Groups
As you’re adding or editing products in the Products section, you’ll see a button that says Add variants. Select that button, and you’ll see a space to name your Variant Group.
If you are selling t-shirts that come in a variety of sizes, for example, you can name the first Group “Size,” and then next to that group header, you can add your Variant Value Name and list all the variants you want to offer, like Small, Medium, Large, etc.
If those t-shirts also come in different colors, you can create a second Group using the + Add variant group button and name that “Color.” Then you’ll list all your color variants next to that group.
Once you’ve saved your Variant Groups, you’ll see those different groups combine to create one list of variant combinations. You can then bulk select from your list of variants to set specific quantities for each particular variant combination. If some are more expensive than others, you can set a unique price for each variant combination, too.
Steps
- Go to the Products tab in your Big Cartel admin.
- Click the Add product, or select an existing product to edit.
- In the Variants section, click Manage variants.
- In the Variant Group Name field, enter a name that fits your product options (e.g., Size or Color). The default is “Options,” but you can change it to whatever makes sense for your product.
- Add values in the Variant Value Name field (like Small, Medium, Large), and use + Add new value to include additional options.
- If your product needs more than one group of variants (like both size and color), click + Add variant group.
- Once you’ve added all your variants, click Save changes.
- You'll return to the product page — review your variant list to make sure everything looks correct. You can always click Manage variants again to make edits.
Edit multiple variants at once
If you need to update things like pricing or stock across several variants:
- Go to the Products tab
- Select the product you want to update
- Click Manage variants
- Select the variants you want to edit
- Choose an action: Manage inventory to update stock levels Edit price to update pricing
- Apply your changes
- Click Save changes
Update inventory for individual variants
To adjust stock levels one-by-one:
- Go to the Products tab
- Select your product
- Click Manage variants
- Update the stock count for each variant
- Click Save changes
