Set Up Stripe: Accept Cards, Wallet Payments, and Buy Now, Pay Later

Connecting Stripe to your shop lets you accept major credit and debit cards, digital wallet payments, and eligible Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options. Stripe deposits funds directly into your bank account and manages payment processing securely behind the scenes.

Express checkout with Stripe

In addition to more payment methods, enabling Stripe in your shop also gives your customers access to Express checkout. Buyers with compatible devices and browsers can speed through checkout using payment methods they’re already familiar with, saving time and increasing conversion rates in your shop. Express Checkout currently supports Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link as possible payment options, which appear at the top of the page during the checkout process.

When a buyer selects an Express Checkout option, it’ll submit their pre-saved shipping, contact, and payment information, allowing them to skip the rest of the checkout page and purchase items in your shop with confidence and ease.

What You’ll Need

Payment Methods Available with Stripe

Stripe groups payment options into categories to make it easier to understand what your customers can use at checkout.

Cards

Customers can pay using major credit and debit cards, including:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Discover

(Card availability may vary by country.)

Card details are entered directly at checkout for a seamless experience.

Wallet Payments

Wallet payments allow customers to check out quickly using stored payment credentials on their device.

Eligible wallet options may include:

  • Amazon Pay
  • Apple Pay (available to customers using Safari with Apple Pay set up)
  • Google Pay (available on supported browsers and devices)
  • Link by Stripe (Stripe’s saved checkout experience)

Wallet options appear automatically when a customer’s device and browser support them.

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)

Depending on your Stripe account and country, you may be eligible to offer installment payment options such as:

  • Afterpay / Clearpay
  • Affirm
  • Klarna

With BNPL, customers pay over time while you receive payment upfront (minus standard Stripe fees).

Availability depends on:

  • Your Stripe account settings
  • Your country
  • The customer’s location and eligibility

Fees & Payouts

  • U.S. Stripe pricing typically starts at 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction (rates vary by country and payment type).
  • Funds are deposited directly into your connected bank account.
  • Standard payouts are typically 2–7 business days, depending on your Stripe settings and location.

Stripe manages fraud detection, payment authorization, and dispute handling within your Stripe dashboard.

Managing Payments & Disputes

All Stripe payments are managed in your Stripe Dashboard, where you can:

If a dispute is filed, Stripe will notify you directly with instructions on how to respond.

Best Practices

  • Consider connecting both Stripe and PayPal to offer the widest range of checkout options.
  • Keep your Stripe account fully verified to avoid payout delays.
  • Review your enabled payment methods in Stripe to ensure they align with your audience and region.

Summary

By connecting Stripe, you can:

  • Accept major credit and debit cards
  • Offer fast wallet payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Provide eligible Buy Now, Pay Later options
  • Receive payouts directly to your bank account

Grouping payment methods this way makes it easier to understand what’s available — and gives your customers more flexible ways to pay.
