Customize Your Homepage

Your homepage introduces customers to your shop. It should quickly show what you sell, communicate your brand, and help customers decide where to go next.

The homepage elements available to you depend on your template, but every template includes options that can help you create a strong homepage and an easy shopping experience. Your template may feature a large welcome image, slideshow images, featured products, promotional messages, buttons, or a simpler product-focused layout.

You don’t need to use every available feature. Focus on the images, messages, and products that best represent your brand and help customers browse your shop.

Before you start

It helps to have the following ready:

  • A high-quality homepage or welcome image
  • A short message about your shop
  • Products or categories you want to highlight
  • A promotion or announcement, if you have one
  • The page or product you want customers to visit next

See Build Your Brand in Your Shop for help gathering your brand essentials.

Open your homepage settings

Open your shop’s designer and head to your homepage section for your selected template.

The names and locations of these settings may vary. Look for terms such as:

  • Welcome Image
  • Homepage Image
  • Banner Image
  • Welcome Text
  • Featured Message
  • Homepage Layout
  • Featured Products
  • Button Text

If you don’t see one of these options, it may not be included with your current template.

Add a homepage image

Your homepage image is often one of the first things customers notice. It can feature your products, introduce a new collection, promote an upcoming event, or simply set the mood for your brand.

Choose an image that:

  • Is clear and high quality
  • Represents your products or brand
  • Has enough open space for text, if your template displays text over the image
  • Keep the main focus in the center of the image in case the edges are cropped due to image constraints
  • Looks good on desktop and mobile

Keep important products, faces, and text away from the outer edges. Templates may crop homepage images differently depending on the screen size.

Your template settings will display the recommended image size

Write your homepage message

Use your homepage message to quickly tell customers what they’ll find in your shop or what you want them to do next.

Your message could:

  • Describe what you make or sell
  • Introduce your latest collection
  • Share a promotion
  • Announce an upcoming event
  • Welcome customers to your shop

Keep it short and direct. One or two sentences will usually be enough.

For example:

Handmade ceramics created in small batches. Explore our latest collection.

Depending on your template, this setting may be called Welcome Text, Welcome Header, Homepage Tagline, or Featured Message.

Add a button

If you're using a template like Netizen, Neat, Trace, or Foundry that includes a homepage button, use it to direct customers toward one important action.

Examples include:

  • Shop New Arrivals
  • View All Products
  • Explore the Collection
  • Learn About Our Shop
  • Read Our Shop Policies

Use clear text so customer know where the button will take them.

Feature products or categories

Some templates allow you to highlight products or categories on the homepage. Use this space to direct attention to:

  • New products
  • Best sellers
  • Seasonal collections
  • Limited releases
  • Products included in a promotion

Choose how many featured products you want to display on your homepage. By default, featured products follow the order in which they’re arranged in your Products section. If you feature a category, the first product assigned to that category will appear first.

Some templates also include a Featured products order setting that lets you arrange products by Top sellers, Newest, Most viewed, or Recently updated.

Choose products with strong images that look good together, and confirm that each product is active, available, and assigned to the correct category.

Choose your homepage layout

Your template determines the homepage layouts and sections available to you. Depending on the template, you may be able to control:

  • The size or placement of your welcome image
  • Whether products or categories appear first
  • The number of products displayed
  • The order of homepage sections
  • Whether a message or button appears over an image
  • Whether the homepage uses a slideshow, grid, or full-screen layout

Preview the available layouts using your actual products and images. Choose the layout that makes your shop easy to understand and puts your most important content first.

Preview your homepage

Before publishing, preview the full homepage on desktop and mobile.

Check that:

  • Your main image is clear and cropped correctly
  • Text is easy to read
  • Buttons lead to the correct destination
  • Featured products and categories appear as expected
  • Customers can quickly understand what you sell
  • Important content isn’t hidden or pushed too far down the page

Make any necessary adjustments, then save and publish your changes.

If you can’t find a homepage setting

If a setting isn’t showing:

  1. Check whether the feature is available with your current template.
  2. Look for a similar setting with a different name.
  3. Check whether another homepage option is replacing or hiding it.
  4. Confirm that the feature is available on your plan.
  5. Preview another template if the feature is important to your shop.

See What You Can Customize on Each Template for more information about template-dependent settings.

When your homepage clearly communicates who you are, what you sell, what makes your shop distinctive, and also directs your buyers where to go next, then you’re set!
